Luzzati, Denise (Institut de Biologie Physico-Chimique, Paris, France). Effect of thymine starvation on messenger ribonucleic acid synthesis in Escherichia coli. J. Bacteriol. 92:1435-1446. 1966.-During the course of thymine starvation, the rate of synthesis of messenger ribonucleic acid (mRNA, the rapidly labeled fraction of the RNA which decays in the presence of dinitrophenol or which hybridizes with deoxyribonucleic acid) decreases exponentially, in parallel with the viability of the thymine-starved bacteria. The ability of cell-free extracts of starved bacteria to incorporate ribonucleoside triphosphates into RNA was determined; it was found to be inferior to that of extracts from control cells. The analysis of the properties of cell-free extracts of starved cells shows that their decreased RNA polymerase activity is the consequence of a modification of their deoxyribonucleic acid, the ability of which to serve as a template for RNA polymerase decreases during starvation.

Amino acid regulation of messenger ribonucleic acid synthesis in T4-infected Escherichia coli.
The effect of amino acid starvation on the synthesis of T4 messenger ribonucleic acid (mRNA) was studied by measuring the uptake of labeled precursors into Escherichia coli cells which were infected prior to amino acid starvation. The results indicated that the rate of uptake of labeled uracil and adenine into T4 mRNA was reduced by approximately 50% when amino acids were withheld from stringen...
متن کاملIsoleucine and threonine can prolong protein and ribonucleic acid synthesis in pyridoxine-starved mutants of Escherichia coli B.
Pyridoxineless mutants of Escherichia coli B stopped incorporation of nucleosides into trichloroacetic acid-insoluble material about 40 to 60 min after pyridoxine starvation was initiated, whereas incorporation of amino acids (measured the same way) slowed but did not stop for several hours. Both these incorporations and cell density were increased most effectively by the presence of either thr...
متن کاملRibonucleic acid synthesis in T2-infected Escherichia coli during "stringent" control.
The leucine auxotroph Escherichia coli 2961 exhibited stringent control of net ribonucleic acid (RNA) synthesis during amino acid starvation. After leucine was exhausted from the medium, the rate of uracil incorporation into RNA rapidly decreased to 2 to 4% of the prestarvation value. Infection of the starved cells with T2 phage stimulated uracil incorporation to a level equivalent to that of u...
متن کاملThe control of ribonucleic acid synthesis during amino acid deprivation in Escherichia coli.
The rate of RNA synthesis in a stringent strain of Escherichia coli was measured before and during amino acid deprivation. Upon amino acid deprivation the rate of RNA synthesis rapidly fell to 30% of the control rate and did not significantly change from that value upon prolonged starvation. The composition of RNA synthesized during amino acid deprivation was investigated by hybridization-compe...
متن کاملInhibition of ribonucleic acid synthesis by nalidixic acid in Escherichia coli.
The effect of low concentrations of nalidixic acid on ribonucleic acid (RNA) synthesis in Escherichia coli was examined. It was observed that RNA synthesis in exponentially growing cells was not significantly affected, in harmony with previous studies. However, RNA synthesis was markedly depressed by nalidixic acid during starvation for an amino acid or during chloramphenicol treatment. This ef...
